CBCTR Progression TMA Case Sets 1 and 2 (distributed 2002-2006)
The CBCTR Progression TMAs have been constructed to permit comparisons of marker prevalence
across three categories of breast cancer patients: node-negative, node-positive and metastatic.
The Resource contains several hundred specimens in each of these three categories. To create
its first progression TMAs the CBCTR selected from these eligible cases a collection of 504
specimens which were then divided into two non-overlapping groups, Case Sets 1 and 2, each
representing 252 breast tissue specimens.
Each case set was arrayed in quadruplicate to address possible tissue heterogeneity. Four
cores were taken from each of the 252 breast tissue specimens in Case Set 1, and from 36
control specimens, to develop four replicate TMA blocks that each contains a total of 288
cores. The same process was then used to construct four replicate TMA blocks for Case Set
2. From each of the replicate TMA blocks for both case sets, slide sections containing up
to 288 cores were cut.
The design of the CBCTR Progression TMAs constructed from Case Sets 1 and 2 is such that
an applicant whose request for TMAs was approved was required to accept a minimum of two
sections cut from different replicate blocks, from one of the case sets. TMA sections from
Case Set 1 are no longer available. A limited number of sections remain to be distributed
from Case Set 2 to applicants with approved requests.
